FOREWORD

I am delighted to see a comprehensive book entitled “ Human Health, Diseases and the Environment-(dissemination of research findings) and Emerging and re-emerging diseases-update” written by Professor Emeritus Dr. A. K. M. Kafiluddin. I had an opportunity glance over the book consisting of 47 chapters out of which 30 chapters deal with research with findings on different subjects such as noise pollution, air pollution, water supply and sanitation, environmental linkage with health of the children, climate change, violence, accident and injuries with special emphasis on road traffic injuries, poisoning (arsenic, lead), vector born diseases like malaria, filaria, kala-azar, dengue, diabetes mellitus, diarrhoea, nutrition, disaster specially earth quake, tsunami.
All of the remaining chapters deal with epidemiology, communicable and non-communicable diseases, public health administration and reproductive child health.
This, I think, is one of the first publications dealing with a broad spectrum of environmental research, both at the national and global level including Bangladesh. The research related to environment has disclosed the relationship of the different cultural, social and environmental factors in causation of disease and affecting health. Te research on climate change on health and vector-born diseases will no doubt raise awareness among the civil societies. The research findings on water and sanitation have shown the guidelines for drinking water quality, guidelines for the safe use of waste water and excreta in agriculture. The author has rightfully described the threat of human life by hydrological disaster. He has not failed to point out that climate and weather have always had a powerful impact on human health and well being. But like other large natural system, global climate change is, therefore, a newer challenge to ongoing efforts to protect human health. It is hoped that the book will be useful to all those concerned with research interest in different subjects as mentioned above. The book will also be useful to stimulate graduate and post-graduate students, scientists, such as health and environmental activities, civil society, policy planners, decision makers, medical and public health professional to understand the gravity of environmental disaster, health and health related problems consequently sustainable national development. It also contains useful recommendations.
I wish that the book will be an excellent publication.
I am delighted to congratulate the author for his splendid work.
